150 years! It appears as the other day. Standing here how many events I might have witnessed! For how many needy patients,I might have extended my support! I have see, generation after generation coming to me at time of needs and taking shelter.
Modest beginnings
I remember me starting as infirmary with three wards in 1851 looking after the British residents of Secunderabad with a General Maternity and a ward for paupers. The concept of caring for the poor might have started from the day one. I remember colone Thompson expanding to a cantonment hospital at the beginning of 20th century with 95 beds form funds collected as a memorial to the late king Emperor Edward VII.
Living as king Edward
I vividly remember breaking of world war I and alter I being named as King Edward Memorial Hospital in the year 1913.
With my speck and clean wards, green lawns, majestic central stair case and royal lift, I was in the eyes of everyone. The British, Parasis and the locals were my regular patrons and donated generously in the memory of their dear ones and more and more wards were added.
I saw whole of India and later Hyderabad becoming independent and the British leaving the power but leaving behind their legacy, contribution to the society and beautiful monuments.
Some new guests started coming to me, the medical students from the newly started Peoples medical college, later called as Gandhi Medical College. They brought colour, vigour and a new dimension to me. I was made a teaching hospital and to my "hearts" desire I was named as Gandhi Hospital on the name of great apostle of peace. It was the year 1958.
Gandhi's March
My mission of serving the poor and smoothening the suffering reached new heights as new specialty departments were added. My new O.T block, a dream project of the Dr. Subba Rao was an addition of par excellence whose passion for my development and his vision for future were exemplary. A new maternity and pediatric wing was added and started attending to the mother and the child.
Under single umbrella my family started functioning, making me as the only General hospital in twin cities with all specialties available.
My achievements and services most of the time go unrecognized. How proud I was when the first open heart surgery was performed at my place in whole of Andhra Pradesh in the year 1976. My surgery, orthopedics, neuro surgery and cardio thoracic surgery departments were second to none in their achievements and service. My family comprises of nearly 300 Doctors, 300 Nursing staff, 300 Fourth-class employees, 200 Junior Doctors, 150 Nursing students and 1012 patients in various wards. My daily out patients are about 1000 to
1500 coming from various parts of the city and neighboring districts of Telangana. I am fortunate and privileged to serve the poor for so many years with the love and affection of my family members.
I saw changing horizons on the medical field, beginning of corporate culture and corporate hospitals, In spite of my age with leaking roofs and falling walls, chocking drains I was there serving the needy in the hour of need, a true Gandhian.
I recollect the day on which the late CM. N.T. Rama Rao Garu realizing my contribution to the medical fraternity decided to handover the jail premises to Gandhi Hospital and the college and laying the foundation stone in 1987 into he jail premises.
I also remember the anxious days when some clouds of doubts were hovering over regarding the handing over of the land after shifting of the jail. How can I forget the silent protest demonstrated by the Doctors and the well-wishers for a period of 201 days. My hear skipped few beats when our beloved Hom. CM Nara Chandra Babu Naidu Garu announced the handing over the jail land to construction of modern college and hospital complex in one of the glittering function. I bow my head in appreciation of what you people have done for me in this direction.
New leaves...New buildings
Now when I see the new complex is getting ready for inauguration, my feelings are multiple. I am told, I am going to have floor area of 9 lakh square feet with 8 floors with separate block for emergency and OP departments. I am told that I will be equipped with state-of-the art equipment costing about 20 crores with CT Scan, MRI Scan, Color Doppler, New cath lab, New Open Heart Surgery Equipment and Integrated theatre system by which one can show the surgery to any where in the world. I am floored by the affection that you have shown me on my grand 150th year. I thank everyone from bottom of my heart for this wonderful gesture.
With rejuvenated spirit and commitment, I once again get myself dedicated to the noble task of serving the poor and achieve excellent in the services that are going to be provided. Let me carry forward an ever-advancing civilization for the people of Andhra Pradesh.
We at Gandhi are privileged-to serve the suffering.
